Dubai taxi fares changed significantly in November 2025. RTA introduced dynamic pricing for app-based bookings, meaning the price you pay through Careem, Bolt, or the DTC Smart App now varies by time of day. Street-hail taxis kept their flat rate structure. This guide covers the current 2026 fare breakdown for both booking methods, how much common journeys cost, when taxis are cheaper than the metro or ride-sharing, and how to pay including with your Nol card.
How Dubai taxi fares are calculated
Every Dubai taxi fare has three components: a flagfall (the starting charge when you get in), a per-kilometre rate, and additional surcharges for Salik tolls, waiting time, and airport pickups. App bookings add a fourth component: a time-based booking fee introduced in November 2025.
The per-kilometre rate in 2026 is AED 2.19, adjusted slightly each month in line with RTA’s fuel price index. This rate applies consistently across standard cream-coloured RTA taxis regardless of booking method.
Street hail rates (unchanged in 2026)
If you flag a taxi on the street, the traditional flat rate structure remains in place. These rates have not changed.
| Time | Flagfall | Per km | Minimum fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day (6am to 10pm) | AED 5.00 | AED 2.14 to AED 2.26 | AED 12 |
| Night (10pm to 6am) | AED 5.50 | AED 2.14 to AED 2.26 | AED 12 |
Additional charges on top of the fare: Salik toll gates cost AED 4 per gate crossed (dynamic pricing applies with AED 6 during peak hours since January 2026). Waiting time costs AED 0.50 per minute when the taxi is stationary or moving slowly.
App booking rates: dynamic pricing introduced November 2025
App-based taxi bookings through Careem (Hala), S’hail, Bolt, Zed, and the DTC Smart App now use dynamic pricing. The minimum fare for app bookings is AED 13 (up from AED 12). The flat booking fees of AED 10 and AED 12 that previously applied have been discontinued and replaced with time-based booking fees.
| Day | Time slot | Booking fee | Flagfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | Peak hours (8am to 9:59am and 4pm to 7:59pm) | AED 7.50 | AED 5.00 |
| Off-peak (10am to 3:59pm) | AED 4.00 | AED 5.00 | |
| Night (10pm to 5:59am) | AED 4.50 | AED 5.50 | |
| Friday | Peak hours (8am to 9:59am and 4pm to 9:59pm) | AED 7.50 | AED 5.00 |
| Off-peak (10am to 3:59pm) | AED 4.00 | AED 5.00 | |
| Night (midnight to 5:59am) | AED 4.50 | AED 5.50 | |
| Saturday and Sunday | Peak hours (4pm to 9:59pm) | AED 7.50 | AED 5.00 |
| Late night (10pm to 11:59pm) | AED 7.50 | AED 5.50 | |
| Off-peak (6am to 3:59pm) | AED 4.00 | AED 5.00 |
Peak vs off-peak saving: booking a taxi through an app during off-peak hours saves AED 3.50 on the booking fee alone compared to peak hours. On a AED 25 journey, that is a 14% saving just from timing your booking.
Airport taxi rates
Taxis starting from Dubai International Airport (DXB) have a higher flagfall of AED 25 regardless of time of day. This applies to all terminals (Terminal 1, 2, and 3). The per-kilometre rate after pickup is the same as standard taxis at approximately AED 2.14 to AED 2.33.
For trips from major event venues including Expo City, Global Village, and Dubai World Trade Centre, special starting fares of AED 20 to AED 25 may apply during large events to reflect demand.
Taxis not regulated by RTA at Dubai Airport may charge higher rates. Always use the official RTA taxi rank inside the terminal or book through a registered app to ensure metered, regulated fares.
Common journey cost estimates
| Journey | Approximate distance | Estimated fare (street hail) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai | 15 km | AED 50 to AED 65 | AED 25 airport surcharge included. Salik may add AED 4 to AED 6. |
| Dubai Airport to Dubai Marina | 32 km | AED 65 to AED 85 | Multiple Salik gates likely. Airport surcharge included. |
| Downtown to Dubai Marina | 28 km | AED 55 to AED 70 | 1 to 2 Salik gates. |
| Dubai Mall to JBR | 20 km | AED 40 to AED 55 | 1 Salik gate likely. |
| Business Bay to DIFC | 3 km | AED 12 to AED 15 | Minimum fare applies. |
| Dubai Mall to Deira City Centre | 12 km | AED 25 to AED 35 | Salik gate may add AED 4 to AED 6. |
All estimates are approximate and exclude waiting time charges, which accumulate at AED 0.50 per minute in traffic. During peak hours with heavy traffic, a 15 km journey that takes 45 minutes instead of 20 minutes adds AED 12.50 in waiting charges on top of the distance fare.
How to pay for a Dubai taxi
Cash: accepted in all taxis. Keep small denominations as drivers may not always have change for large notes.
Credit and debit card: most RTA taxis are equipped with card readers. Inform the driver at the start of the journey if you plan to pay by card to avoid issues at the end.
Nol card: all RTA taxis accept Nol card payments and taxi rides earn Nol Plus loyalty points. For residents who use public transport regularly, paying taxi fares with a personalised blue Nol card earns 1 point per AED 1 spent, redeemable for Nol card top-ups and restaurant discounts. For details read our Nol Plus loyalty programme guide.
In-app payment: Careem, Bolt, and DTC Smart App all support in-app card payment. The app booking fee is charged as part of the total fare displayed before you confirm the booking.
Taxi vs Metro vs Careem vs Uber: when each makes sense
| Option | Best for | Typical cost (10 km journey) | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street hail taxi | When a taxi is immediately available. No app needed. Consistent metered pricing. | AED 25 to AED 30 | Hard to find during peak hours in busy areas |
| App taxi (off-peak) | When you need guaranteed availability. Off-peak booking fees are reasonable. | AED 29 to AED 34 (including AED 4 booking fee) | Peak booking fees add AED 3.50 extra |
| Dubai Metro | Long distance journeys along Metro routes. Cheapest option per km. | AED 4 to AED 8.50 depending on zones | Limited to Metro line locations. Not available everywhere. |
| Careem (non-taxi) | When surge pricing is low. Careem Go and Careem Plus offer economy options. | AED 20 to AED 50 depending on surge | Surge pricing can make it significantly more expensive than RTA taxis |
| Bus | Very short journeys or budget travel. AED 3 to AED 5 per ride. | AED 3 to AED 5 | Slow. Routes do not cover all areas. |
RTA taxis remain cheaper than Careem and Uber for most journeys when surge pricing is active. During peak hours on a Friday evening, a 15 km Careem ride can cost AED 80 to AED 120 in surge while an RTA app taxi covers the same journey for AED 55 to AED 65. The regulated metered system protects you from surge pricing.
Tips to reduce your taxi bill in Dubai
Book through an app during off-peak hours. The difference between a peak booking fee (AED 7.50) and an off-peak booking fee (AED 4.00) is AED 3.50 per journey. For someone taking 20 app taxis per month, timing bookings for off-peak saves AED 70 per month.
Flag a taxi on the street instead of booking through an app. Street hail fares have no booking fee. The minimum fare is AED 12 versus AED 13 for app bookings. On short journeys this AED 1 to AED 3.50 difference matters.
Pay with your Nol card to earn loyalty points. Every dirham spent on taxi fares earns Nol Plus points when you pay with a personalised blue Nol card. These accumulate toward Nol card top-ups and restaurant discounts.
Avoid peak hours for airport trips. Booking an airport taxi through the app during peak hours adds AED 7.50 in booking fees on top of the AED 25 airport surcharge. Where possible, travel to the airport during off-peak times to save on the booking fee.
Use the Metro for longer routes with stations near your origin and destination. A 28 km trip from Downtown to Dubai Marina costs AED 55 to AED 70 by taxi but AED 6.50 to AED 8.50 by Metro. The Metro takes longer but the cost saving is significant for regular commuters.
What is the current taxi fare per km in Dubai in 2026?
AED 2.19 per kilometre in 2026, adjusted slightly each month with RTA’s fuel price index between AED 2.14 and AED 2.26. The flagfall (starting charge) is AED 5.00 during the day and AED 5.50 at night for street hail taxis. App bookings add a time-based booking fee of AED 4.00 (off-peak) to AED 7.50 (peak).
What is the minimum taxi fare in Dubai?
AED 12 for street hail taxis. AED 13 for app-based bookings (increased from AED 12 in November 2025). This minimum applies regardless of how short the journey is.
How much is a taxi from Dubai Airport to Downtown?
Approximately AED 50 to AED 65 including the AED 25 airport flagfall surcharge, the per-kilometre charge for approximately 15 km, and any Salik tolls crossed. Traffic conditions and waiting time charges can push this higher during peak hours.
Can I pay a Dubai taxi with a Nol card?
Yes. All RTA taxis accept Nol card payments and taxi fares earn Nol Plus loyalty points. Personalised blue Nol card holders earn 1 point per AED 1 spent on taxi fares, redeemable for Nol card top-ups and restaurant discounts.
What changed about Dubai taxi fares in 2025 and 2026?
In November 2025, RTA introduced dynamic pricing for app-based taxi bookings. The flat booking fees of AED 10 and AED 12 were replaced with time-based fees ranging from AED 4.00 (off-peak) to AED 7.50 (peak hours). The minimum fare for app bookings increased from AED 12 to AED 13. Street hail taxis were not affected and retained their flat rate structure.
Is it cheaper to take a taxi or Careem in Dubai?
RTA taxis are generally cheaper than Careem for most journeys, especially when Careem surge pricing is active. RTA meters are regulated and transparent. Careem and Uber prices fluctuate with demand and can be significantly higher during peak hours, bad weather, or major events. For budget conscious travel, Hala (Careem’s RTA taxi booking feature) combines app convenience with regulated RTA metered pricing.
