Roughly 90% of the UAE’s population moved here from somewhere else, which means almost everyone around you has been through the same process of starting a social life from zero. That’s the hard part and the good part at once: there’s no built in community waiting for you, but there’s also no shortage of other people actively looking to connect. Volunteering, in particular, is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to close that gap. Here’s where to start.

1. Making friends and networking for free
Building a circle here works best through a handful of channels used consistently rather than trying everything once: nationality and interest based Facebook groups, apps like Bumble BFF and Meetup, fitness communities that meet weekly, volunteering, and free festivals and workshops. The pattern that actually works is picking one or two of these and sticking with them for a month, since most expats report feeling socially settled after 3 to 6 months of consistent effort, not from a single event.
The full breakdown of every method, including the specific Facebook groups, apps, and fitness communities worth joining, is on the making friends and networking page.
2. Volunteer organisations worth knowing
The UAE has a genuinely active volunteer scene covering a wide range of causes: Al Noor and Dubai Autism Centre for people of determination, Dubai Cares and Make A Wish UAE for children’s welfare, Emirates Red Crescent for broader community service, Pink Caravan for breast cancer awareness, and SmartLife Foundation for supporting blue collar workers. Most accept walk in volunteers with little more than an email or a sign up form, and the mix of nationalities at a typical session is wider than almost any other social setting in the country.
Contact details, registration steps, and what each organisation actually needs from volunteers are on the volunteer opportunities page.
3. The Giving Family: the easiest first volunteering session
For anyone who wants to try volunteering without committing to anything formal, The Giving Family runs weekly Sunday meal distributions in Al Quoz (daily during Ramadan), free to join with no registration required beyond checking their Instagram for the location. Around 100 volunteers typically show up per session to pack and distribute meal kits, and sessions run 1 to 2 hours, making it one of the lowest friction ways to meet a wide range of people in a single afternoon.
How to show up, what to expect, and how to donate instead if volunteering in person isn’t possible are covered on the Giving Family page.
For the rest of what settling into life in the UAE involves, from housing to visas, the Expat & Living hub covers it all in one place.
